Questions to Ask Your Prospective Transporter

Below is a list of questions you should consider asking any prospective hauler.  Check the math and make sure you are satisfied that the hauler you decide upon is meeting equipment safety parameters.  Besides the obvious safety concerns, it is a little known fact that if a vehicle that is towing gets in an accident and is exceeding the vehicle or trailer recommended towing limits, then the insurance companies are not obligated to pay any claims.

  1. What is the square footage of the trailer space available for the animals?
  2. How much square footage do you allow for each animal?
  3. What is the axle load limit for the trailer?
  4. What is the empty trailer weight?
  5. What is the towing capacity of the towing vehicle?
  6. How many hours per day is the rig moving?
  7. How many llamas do you put in the trailer?
  8. How many compartments can the trailer be divided into?
  9. What means are you using to divide the compartments?
  10. What do you use to bed the trailer?
  11. How often are the animals checked?
  12. How often is the rig checked (lights, brakes, tires, connections, cargo)?
  13. What is the trip itinerary and what is the intended route?
  14. What other animals are going in the trailer with yours – which ranch are they from?
  15. Are the animals being exercised daily – you may or may not want your animal taken out of the trailer in a strange area with a strange handler.
