About Flaming Star

We make gear for the working llama!  Specifically, we manufacture the famous Flaming Star Packing Gear and Driving Harnesses for llamas.  Our smaller packs fit miniature donkeys and horses, goats, and alpacas.  We also specialize in accessories for the packing and driving enthusiasts.  If you don't see what you want on this website, please send us an e-mail.  We'll do our best to accommodate you!

Flaming Star Llama Gear was founded in 1992 by Sid Lilienthal with a mission to make a comfortable, functional, and durable pack.  Sid worked diligently to design, manufacture, and make available a pack that would, first and foremost, be safe and comfortable for the llama and be built in a way to meet the specific structural needs of llamas so that that saddle the did not put any pressure on the llama's spine.  Llamas differ from equines in that prolonged, direct pressure on the vertebrae can cause injury or even paralysis.

Sid spent years in research and testing to produce the finest llama pack saddle in the world.  Flaming Star saddles are built to evenly distribute the weight on either side of the spine along the upper portion of the rib cage.  A two-cinch system is employed to keep the saddle firmly in place and to avoid shifting that may lead to soreness.  The semi rigid design also allows for a good fit over a wide range of sizes.

Flaming Star was purchased in 2005 and the company was subsequently sold again to one other owner before being purchased in 2021 by Lisa Labendeira, who continues the tradition Sid started.  Lisa is an avid llama enthusiast with extensive knowledge and first-hand experience in llama driving, packing, training, showing and breeding and has been involved with llamas for over 34 years.
